Who We Are

The Transparency Institute Guyana Inc. (TIGI) was born out of the concern for the level of corruption that was perceived to have existed in the Guyanese society.  The organization was incorporated in November 2010 under the Companies Act (1991), Chapter 89:01 of the Laws of Guyana, as a non-profit organization devoted to the promotion of good governance, transparency and greater accountability, and assisting in the fight against corruption. TIGI is committed to making a difference in Guyana by speaking out about practices and activities that are corrupt, raising awareness about the ill effects of corruption and developing and disseminating measures to curb corruption.  It is an affiliate of Transparency International (TI), headquartered in Berlin, Germany, which has a presence in over 100 countries.

Since its establishment, an integral part of TIGI’s work has been sensitizing the public about corruption; its causes, consequences and adverse effects and what they can do to minimize its occurrence.  In this regard, we are indeed grateful to the organisations including High Commissions for their financial assistance especially at the start-up phase and particularly in regards to our outreach programmes involving visits to various locations, placing of public service advertisements, the installation of billboards and banners and the production and distribution of fliers.

TIGI’s vision is a Guyana that is free of corruption so that all citizens can derive the full benefits of its resources and activities to promote development.

TIGI is a national anti-corruption organization dedicated to promoting transparency, accountability and integrity at all levels of society through education, awareness, research and action in partnership with citizens, Government, civil society organizations and the Private Sector.

Guiding Principles  

  1. Our loyalty belongs to the people of Guyana but especially the young people whose future must be protected.
  2. As coalition-builders, we will work cooperatively with all individuals and groups, with for-profit and not-for-profit corporations and organizations, and with the government and international development partners committed to the fight against corruption, subject to the policies and priorities set out in our articles of incorporation and work plans and TI’s Charter and the Laws of Guyana.
  3. We undertake to be open (except when identities need to be protected), honest and accountable in our relationships with everyone we work with, and with each other. 
  4. We will be democratic, politically non-partisan and non-sectarian in our work. 
  5. We will condemn bribery and corruption vigorously wherever it has been reliably identified, although we ourselves do not seek to expose individual cases of corruption.
  6. The positions we take will be based on sound, objective and professional analysis and high standards of research.
  7.  We will only accept funding that does not compromise our ability to address issues freely, thoroughly and objectively.
  8. We will provide accurate and timely reports of our activities to our stakeholders.
