We advocate for power to be held accountable. Everywhere.
Corruption is widely understood as a root cause of many of the biggest challenges facing the world today.
TIGI as an affiliate of Transparency International is inspired by TI which is a diverse movement with one global voice. Together, we strive towards a world where the power to make decisions affecting people’s lives is held to account and serves the common good.
To achieve this, we address loopholes in legislation and regulation, push the powerful to act with integrity and seek redress for those who are robbed of a chance to live in an equitable and just society.
We use evidence to push for anti-corruption measures that work
The problems we tackle are complex and deep-seated.
Research
We plan to increase our research capacity so that the positions we take are informed by the situation on the ground in Guyana. We advocate and campaign to ensure transparency and accountability in all decision-making in practice, leaving no space for abuse.
Our efforts to address the obvious abuses of power over the last ten years have brought us to the attention of those organisations similarly inclined. To that end we have formed alliances with some of the well-known organisations like Guyana Human Rights Association and a Fair Deal for Guyana.
However, we prize our independence of thought and will not necessary reflect positions taken by others. For example, we and our colleagues in the environmental movement both wish to see the degradation of the environment cease. But we do not believe that it is our mission to champion positions we do not yet understand. Hence we may support an economic venture which we feel is likely to bring benefits to the people of Guyana without degradation of the environment and without exploiting them.
Legislation
We believe that the state of Guyana with regard to legislation manifests a peculiar characteristic. It is that investment is made in passage of laws only for those laws to be ignored or circumvented at the pleasure of the powerful. It is our aim to highlight this phenomenon and push for our laws to be obeyed regardless of the inconvenience it might provide to some.
We have also noted that under some powerful influences, there is an attempt to dismantle whatever protection is available under current legislation in the guise of updating the legislation and support actions by our colleagues to ensure that the available protection is maintained.
Finally, it is apparent that mechanisms such as a Public Defender are necessary to be implemented in Guyana and we will be pushing for this.
